The best SaneBox alternatives for a calmer inbox

SaneBox filters your email in the background: it moves unimportant mail out of your inbox, sends a daily digest of it, and adds snoozes, reminders and a one-click way to banish a sender. It works with almost any provider and looks only at the sender, subject and date. You usually look for an alternative because sorting is no longer enough: you want replies drafted for you, a big backlog cleared in bulk, an open source tool, or someone who tells you what actually needs you today. Here is a sourced shortlist, with Qoren as one honest option.

What is the best SaneBox alternative?

It depends on what you want beyond filtering. For bulk cleanup, unsubscribing and rules across any provider, Clean Email. For an open source assistant that labels, drafts and blocks cold email, Inbox Zero. For drafts in your voice plus meeting notes, with a free plan, Fyxer. For labels and drafts waiting when you open your inbox, Jace. For an assistant that drafts replies and routes threads for review, Serif. For an agent that triages your Gmail every 30 minutes, drafts every reply for your approval and messages you only when something is urgent, Qoren. If you use Outlook, iCloud or IMAP and only want filtering, SaneBox is still the cheaper choice.

What SaneBox includes, and what it charges

SaneBox says it works with Gmail, Microsoft 365, Apple iCloud, Yahoo Mail and Fastmail, and with any IMAP, Exchange or ActiveSync server. It reads the sender, subject line and date of your mail and never stores full emails or attachments. Every plan has a 7-day free trial. Plans differ by how many accounts they cover and which SaneBox features they include, with the full set on Dinner.

  • Appetizer: $24 a year for one account.
  • Snack: $9.49 a month or $65 a year for one account.
  • Lunch: $15.99 a month or $109 a year for two accounts.
  • Dinner: $42.99 a month or $319 a year for four accounts.
  • Features include the Daily Digest of unopened unimportant mail, BlackHole to banish a sender for good, Snooze, and Reminders when someone does not answer you in time.

Why you might look for a SaneBox alternative

SaneBox is cheap, private and works almost everywhere. The reasons to compare are about what it does not try to do.

  • It sorts mail but does not write replies, so the messages that need you still need you to type.
  • It reads headers only by design. That is good for privacy, but it cannot judge a message by what it says.
  • You have a backlog of tens of thousands of old messages and want them cleared in bulk.
  • You want an open source tool you can host yourself.

The cleanup alternative

If what you value in SaneBox is a tidy inbox without changing your email app, one tool does the same job with more control over your old mail.

  • Clean Email: works with Yahoo, Gmail, Hotmail, AOL and company accounts, alongside any email app. It groups mail for bulk cleanup, sends unsubscribe requests and blocks senders that ignore them, applies Auto Clean rules to new mail, and has a Screener and a Privacy Monitor. Plans cover 1, 5 or 10 accounts, monthly or yearly, with a free trial; the plans page loads its prices in your browser, so check them there.

The AI assistant alternatives

If you want replies drafted rather than mail sorted, these four read your messages and write for you. All of them read the full content of your mail, unlike SaneBox.

  • Inbox Zero: an open source email assistant you can host yourself, for Gmail and Outlook. Starter is $18 per user a month billed annually ($20 monthly) and sorts and labels mail, drafts replies in your voice, blocks cold email, bulk unsubscribes and archives, and adds email analytics and pre-meeting briefings. Plus is $28 a month annually ($35 monthly) with two accounts per user, a meeting notetaker and Slack. Each plan has a 7-day free trial.
  • Fyxer: works with Gmail and Outlook. The free plan has 400 credits a month, a basic dashboard briefing and a follow-up list. Pro is $37 per person a month billed annually ($49 monthly), with replies drafted in your tone, automatic labels and meeting recording. Team is $64 per person a month billed annually. Paid plans have a 14-day free trial.
  • Jace: labels mail by type and priority and has drafts ready when you open your inbox, with a chat assistant over your business. Plus is $20 a month billed yearly ($25 monthly) for 2 inboxes and unlimited calendars, and Pro is $40 a month billed yearly for 8 inboxes. Both have a 7-day free trial.
  • Serif: reads threads, applies your policy and drafts replies that wait for your review, with assistant pages for Gmail and Outlook. Lite is $30 a month, Standard $50 a month, Pro $200 a month and Team $50 per user a month, each with a 7-day free trial.

Where Qoren fits, and where it does not

Qoren is not an email filter. It runs agents, and one of its templates is an inbox manager: an agent on its own managed machine that sweeps your Gmail every 30 minutes from 06:00 to 20:00 and sorts each new message as urgent, needs reply, FYI, newsletter or junk. It archives newsletters and junk (logged, and always recoverable from the archive) and writes a complete reply for every message that needs one into your Gmail drafts, in your voice, learned from your sent mail. Only urgent mail reaches you right away, on Telegram or Slack, and quiet hours hold unless the sender is on your emergency list. On weekdays at 17:00 it sends a one-screen digest: counts by category, drafts waiting for you, anything that has waited more than 24 hours for your answer, and anything it archived without being sure.

  • What it does well: drafts you can send unedited, urgency you define by sender and topic, every correction turned into a standing rule, suspicious mail (spoofed senders, credential requests, pressure to act) flagged rather than obeyed, sender context from HubSpot if you connect it, and a running tally of drafts sent as written versus rewritten, which it reviews weekly to tighten its rules. Forward a copy of your mail to the agent's own mailbox and new mail is triaged as it lands.
  • What SaneBox does better: it works with Outlook, iCloud, Yahoo, Fastmail and any IMAP server, reads headers only and never stores full emails, offers snooze, follow-up reminders and one-click sender banishing, and costs less.
  • What Qoren does not offer: support for anything but Gmail, snooze, reminders when someone has not answered you, or bulk cleanup of an old backlog. It never sends email and never unsubscribes or deletes without asking. It drafts and reports; you send. It reads full messages, so it holds more of your mail than a header-only filter.
  • Setup is real work: you supply Gmail API credentials with read, label and draft access, and you tell the agent what counts as urgent and show it a few examples in its first conversation. Triage on arrival needs an agent mailbox, which is on some plans only. Model usage is billed on top of the plan.

How to choose

Start from what you want to stop doing, not from a feature list, and check each vendor's pricing page on the day you decide.

  • Filtering on any provider for a few dollars a month, with headers only: stay with SaneBox.
  • A big backlog cleared and newsletters unsubscribed in bulk: Clean Email.
  • An open source assistant you can host yourself: Inbox Zero.
  • Drafts in your voice plus meeting notes, with a free plan to start: Fyxer.
  • Labels and drafts ready across a couple of inboxes: Jace.
  • Drafts that follow your policy and wait for review, on Gmail or Outlook: Serif.
  • An agent that triages Gmail all day, drafts every reply for your approval and only interrupts you for what is urgent: Qoren.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best SaneBox alternative?

There is no single winner. Clean Email is the closest like-for-like for cleanup on any provider, Inbox Zero is open source, Fyxer has a free plan and meeting notes, Jace and Serif draft replies for review, and Qoren gives you an agent that triages Gmail all day and drafts every reply for your approval.

Is there a free SaneBox alternative?

Fyxer has a free plan with 400 credits a month, and Inbox Zero is open source, so you can host it yourself. Clean Email, Jace, Serif and Inbox Zero's hosted plans offer free trials, and SaneBox itself has a 7-day free trial on every plan, according to each vendor's page.

Does SaneBox read my emails?

SaneBox says it looks at the sender, subject line and date and never stores full emails or attachments. The AI assistants on this page, Qoren included, read the full content of your messages so they can draft replies, which is a real privacy trade to weigh.

Which SaneBox alternatives work with Outlook?

Inbox Zero, Fyxer and Serif list Outlook as well as Gmail, and Clean Email works with Hotmail and company accounts. Qoren's inbox manager works with Gmail only, so if you are on Outlook, iCloud or IMAP and only want filtering, SaneBox remains the better fit.

How is Qoren different from SaneBox?

SaneBox is a low-cost filter that sorts mail by its headers on almost any provider. Qoren runs an agent that reads your Gmail every 30 minutes, archives the noise, drafts a full reply to everything that needs one, messages you only for urgent mail and sends a digest each weekday. It never sends email, and it has no snooze, no follow-up reminders and no support for other providers.

Let an agent clear your Gmail before you open it.

Start from the inbox manager template, connect your Gmail, and tell the agent what counts as urgent in its first conversation. It drafts, you send, and model usage is billed on top of the plan.
