Generative engine optimization (GEO)

Also called: GEO, AI search optimization, LLM optimization

Definition

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of making a brand more likely to be mentioned and cited in answers from AI engines such as ChatGPT.

In practice

Classic SEO earns a position in a list of links; GEO tries to earn a place inside the generated answer itself, either as a named recommendation or as a cited source. The two overlap more than the new name suggests, because engines with web search on retrieve pages much as a search engine does, so crawlable, specific, well-cited pages still do the heavy lifting. What people get wrong is treating GEO as a bag of tricks. Nobody controls what an engine says, so the honest version is measurement first: ask the engines your buyers' questions on a schedule, see which sources they cite when you are left out, and change the pages and listings behind those citations. Answer engine optimization (AEO) describes nearly the same work.
