AI share of voice

Also called: AI SOV, LLM share of voice, share of voice in AI search

Definition

AI share of voice is the portion of all brand mentions in AI answers to a fixed set of buyer prompts that go to your brand rather than to your competitors.

In practice

Compute it by asking each engine the same prompts several times, counting every mention of each tracked brand, and dividing your mentions by the total. If the tracked brands are named 100 times and 25 of those are you, your share is 25 percent. The mistake is reading it alone. Share of voice depends on the competitor list you chose, so adding a rival lowers it without anything changing in the answers, and it rises when a competitor disappears even if you are mentioned no more often. Read it next to your mention rate, the share of answers that name you at all, and keep the prompt set and competitor list fixed so one week can be compared with the next.
